There are few places in your home where it is more important to have quality work done. On the surface it may seem like a good place to cut corners. But in reality saving a few dollars here on plumbing can cost you thousands or tens of thousands of dollars.
True Story
There is a very nice couple living in Naples who recently told a friend of mine about their troubles. They had some appliances installed in their kitchen by a company who shall remain nameless. A year or so later they started getting sick. It took almost another year to find what was making them sick. It turns out that when the appliances were installed the water
line for the dishwasher was crimped. It
created a small leak behind the dishwasher. The water and the leak spread. The mold ended up spreading inside their walls, under their tile floors and even into the attic. The repairs ended up with them having to leave their home for two weeks and having to spend $16,000 in repairs. To this day they have been unable to collect a dime from the company who did the damage.
Leaks
As in the story above it's not just the cost of repairing leaks. It's the cost of repairing the damage caused by water and mold. Ripping out walls, carpet, etc. If you hire a fly by night company to do this work, then you end up stuck covering these repairs out of your own pocket. Therefore I highly recommend you hire a quality company that has been in business
at least five years so that you know they will be around if any type of warranty issues arise.
Water Heaters
With water heaters you get what you pay for. Getting a cheap water heater or poor installation can be a disaster. I have been to several homes where the water heater sprang leaks which not only meant replacing the water heater prematurely, but where the water damage was extensive causing the replacement of carpet, drywall but also resulted in huge water bills as some
of these people had been out of state for the summer when their water heater exploded. I highly recommend a quality water heater with a good energy rating, with a high enough capacity for your whole family's water usage and that it be installed by a quality professional company that will be around long enough to cover any warranty issues.
Hire a Professional
In the construction business we refer to the cost of hiring a quality licensed plumber (as opposed to a fly-by-night) as insurance. Meaning that you pay for what you get and that what you really need is the security of knowing that your work is under a warranty that you can actually collect on if necessary. |
